| This residence, built in the Mansard style, was the home of Alderman John Murphy. He was best known for the way he sped around town in his car, the "Red Devil," while at the same time, voting in favor of the city's first motor vehicle regulations, among them, speeding. Sometime between 1911 and 1914, John Murphy developed the prototype for the first successful motorized street sweeper. It was later manufactured by the Elgin Sweeper Company. |
