Great Unveilings

All are welcome! You don't have to be a GPA member to participate. Drinks and refreshments will be provided.

Still not sure what it's all about? In Elgin's Historic Districts, substitute siding is anything that is covering or replacing the original brick, stone, wood shingles, or clapboards of your house. Substitute siding might be aluminum, asphalt, or stucco. Many beautiful homes in Elgin have been modernized in this way. In an effort to bring back our neighborhood's historic beauty, GPA is trying to educate people on the more pleasing appearance of original siding and trim. This event, sponsored by the City of Elgin, in conjunction with the GPA, offers $4,000 grant to the owners of ?Great Unveiling? homes, and as a bonus, they get a big jump start on exterior rehabilitation!

What would be required of YOU? If your home is chosen as a "Great Unveiling" candidate, volunteers will descend upon your house bearing tools and a picnic lunch. They will spend the day removing substitute siding from your house, revealing your home's original charm and beauty (although it may not look so beautiful right away). You would be responsible for obtaining a Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) from the City of Elgin, as well as completing any necessary exterior work, following the city's design guidelines and codes. Sound like a lot of work? It could be, but did you know that a well-restored home is often worth more than a home with substitute siding? If you are interested or have questions, please call a GPA member. Many of them have unveiled their homes without any help or reward money!
