443 E. Chicago
Elgin, Ill

$144,900

It needs a lot of work as two of the three bathrooms have been gutted and it needs a kitchen. 443 E. Chicago St. is one of the most significant homes in the Historic District. I’ve read that it was built in 1842 and it is Elgin’s only home on the HABS survey. The Historic American Building Survey was a make work program for architects during the depression. Architects were given the task of documenting the nation’s important houses and 443 E. Chicago was chosen to be included. The HABS survey contains some drawings and two pictures from 1934. The home was featured on our housewalk. Participants only stepped into the foyer to see the floating staircase and view the antique lights in the foyer and parlor (they are no longer there) Here is the write up from the Housewalk: http://www.gifford-park-assoc.org/housewalk/Booklet_Pages/443_E_chicago.pdf
