544 S. Liberty St.
Elgin, Illinois

This home is a shingle style victorian built in 1892 by Ernest H. Ricker, owner of the Elgin National Nursery; Which originally occupied the 2 residential blocks directly across the street from the home.

Designed by noted local architect W.W. Abell, this home has, among other things: 4 bedrooms, a sitting room, 2 coal burning fireplaces, 2 staircases, inlaid maple flooring, butlers pantry, pocket door, unusually fancy door harware, a full basement (original dirt floor), and a walk up attic....they sure don't build 'em like they used to!

Elgin is a fabulous town, probably most famous for being the home of the Elgin Watch Company, which at one time was the largest supplier of watch movements in the world. Elgin, Illinois has many fine old homes and a strong, active old house community. The leading voice for the "old house community" in Elgin is the Gifford Park Association.
